The integrated treatment technology can be divided into biological contact oxidation, SBR, AO,A2O, etc. The principle of the commonly used A/O treatment technology is that microorganisms reduce nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in sewage into gaseous nitrogen to escape in the anoxic tank, and decompose refractory large molecules of organic matter into small molecules of easily degradable substances, which have the functions of denitrification, hydrolysis and degradation of some organic matters. In the aerobic pool, most of the organic matter was treated by microorganisms and entered the secondary sedimentation tank for mud and water separation.

AO process is an energy-saving biological treatment technology which degrades organic matter at the same time of denitration and greatly reduces oxygen demand. In order to maintain a high nitration rate, the reaction residence time is longer than the ordinary activated sludge process, the sludge sedimentation performance is better, the sludge growth rate is low, the remaining sludge quantity is less, the sedimentation performance is good.

       系列污水處理設備去除有機污染物及氨氮主要依賴于設備中的AO生物處理工藝。其中工作原理是在A級，由于污水有機物濃度很高，微生物處于缺氧狀態(tài)，此時微生物為兼性微生物，所以A級池不僅具有一定的有機物去除功能，減輕后續(xù)好氧池的有機負荷，有機物濃度降低，但仍有一定量的有機物及較高NH₃-N存在。為了使有機物得到進一步氧化分解，同時在碳化作用下硝化作用能順利進行，在O級設置有機負荷較低的好氧生物接觸氧化池。在O級池中主要存在好氧微生物及自氧型細菌（硝化菌）。其中好氧微生物將有機物分解成CO₂和H₂O；自養(yǎng)型細菌（硝化菌）利用有機物分解產(chǎn)生的無機碳或空氣中的CO₂作為營養(yǎng)源，將污水中的NH₃-N轉(zhuǎn)化成NO₂-N、NO₃-N，O級池的出水部分回流到A級池，為A級池提供電子接受體，通過反硝化作用最終消除氮污染。
